Meyersville students step up for pet shelter

The Meyersville Junior National Honor Society chose Pet Adoptions of Cuero for their annual Community Service Project. A collection of much-needed items for cleaning and maintenance, as well as dog and cat food, treats and toys were delivered. In addition they brought several “love” envelopes to help with vet expenses, and a major donation check was the proceeds from their annual bake sale.

Lights Out Initiative Asks for Action During Spring Migration

AUSTIN — Spring is the peak time for bird migration through Texas, and the bright lights of cities and towns can confuse birds as they fly to their northern breeding grounds. Texans are encouraged to help our winged friends on their journey by turning “Lights Out” at night across the state from March 1- June 15, with peak migration occurring April 22 through May 12.

Record Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor: A local business recently placed an ad in the Cuero Record about its forthcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration. Unfortunately, the ad noted, “No annoying mariachi.” Many of us in the Mexican descent community find this comment culturally insensitive if not racist. Mariachi is one of Mexico’s unique and proud traditions and is itself a symbol of Mexico. Scholars suggest it is a blend of indigenous, Mexican, and European influences including the French.
